Il Nuovo Vocabolario

Il Nuovo Vocabolario di Base della Lingua Italiana (the New Basic Vocabulary of the Italian Language, NVdB) is an alphabetical list of around 7,500 words.  It was first published in 1980 as an appendix to Guida all’Uso delle Parole by T De Mauro.  The current list was updated and expanded in 2016.

The list is presented in three tiers – ‘fundamental‘ words, ‘high-usage‘ words and ‘high-availability‘ words.

Usage is determined by the frequency of word occurrence within a sample of texts (textbooks, literary works, newspapers, online chats, spoken language recordings, etc) and of word dispersion or presence across these categories of text and speech, totalling over 18 million analysed words.

  1. A ‘fundamental‘ tier (FO) of around 2,000 high-frequency words which account for 86% of the word occurrences in the analysed texts and speech.
  2. The second tier (AU) of around 3,000 high-usage words account for an additional 6 per cent of occurrences.
  3. A third tier (AD) of around 2,500 high-availability words which appear less frequently in texts and speech but which are very widely known and understood.
The 28,000 words not included in Tiers 1 or 2 account for around 8% of occurrences in the analysed texts and speech.  Note, high-frequency vulgar words are not filtered out. See De Mauro’s online dictionary
